Evo Bluestein’s American Folk Music Assembly Concert celebrates the cultural diversity of America through folk music. Instruments may include: fiddle, banjo, guitar, dulcimer, autoharp, hammered-dulcimer, accordion, spoons, Jew’s harp. Traditional music styles may include: Mexican, Native American, Anglo-Celtic, African American, Appalachian, Cajun. With over 30 years of experience, Evo provides appropriate historical perspective in a concert-lecture format, as he reveals the folk sources of many forms of popular music.
Evo comes by these skills naturally as his childhood home often hosted an array of America’s great bearers of traditional musical culture: Pete, Mike and Peggy Seeger, Bessie Jones, Doc Watson, Jean Ritchie, and Elizabeth Cotten, to name just a few.
Evo performed for many years in The Bluestein Family with his father, university professor Gene Bluestein and his three siblings. Together they performed in many countries and recorded numerous recordings. Evo’s mother Ellie was an award winning advocate for peace and social justice.
Students are invited to sing along, help play instruments, learn rhythms associated with various American folk traditions.
