Folk Programs for Schools

 Letters from 5th Grade Students
Week of October 13-17, 2003 at Las Juntas School
Martinez, California

Dear Mr. Bluestein,
Thank you for coming to our schol to teach different kinds of dances to other grades. I learned so many kinds of dances that I had never done before. I'm glad you came to our school. My favorite dance was Johnny Brown because you got to sing, have emotion, and pick another person you wante to be "it" next. But I still like the other two dances,. I had a wonderful and fun time dancing. I hope I see you again some time at the Junior High School. Thank you for coming.

Your friend,
Andrea

Dear Mr. Bluestein,
Thank you for giving us the privilege to learn folk dance. I especially enjoyed the Virginia Reel. I don't know how you put these dances together and teach them to hundreds of kids, I think you are very talented. . . . I can't believe you played your fiddle for an hour and an half on Friday night. I couldnt' do that in a lifetime. You're unbelievable!
. . . . In the beginning I had no idea what I was doing, and I thought I was going to hate dance class. I would always complain about who I was partners with, but overall I started to get what I was doing, I didn't care who I was partners with, and I loved dance class. Dance class helped me get through my morning, and it gave me something to talk about to my friends and famly. Every morning for a week, I enjoyed my life. Dance class was a great experience for me. I thank you for everything you've done for me. You're great!!

Your student,
Patricia

Dear Mr. Bluestein,
.. . . My favorite dance was Little Johnny Brown. I like it because you got to do your own move. At first, I didn't want to go, but then afer the fist day I found that dancing is thrilling.
. . . When I bought the jaw harp, I thought it ws hard but after I practiced I astonished myself on how good I could do it. Not as good as you, of course. The jaw harp is fun to play now I can play the keyboard, harmonica and the jaw harp.
. . . I'm very glad you came because if you didn't I wouldn't have a clue on how to dance. I couldn't believe how fast you could play the violin and you still played like a pro. Thank you very m uch for coming to Las Juntes School and teaching us how to dance.

Your student,
Cody

Dear Mr. Bluestein,
Thank you for teaching us dances. I enjoyed the Virginia Reel. I really like when we spun our partner. What I liked the most is when the whole school came out and danced. Thank you, Mr. B. I hope we can do this again.

Your student,
Kevin

Dear Mr. Bluestein,
Thank you for being a great dance teacher. It was a great time learning all those dances. . . Hopefully, the dances you taught me will be handy in future reference because dancing skills don't run in my family. . . . Once again, I want to thank you for making dance classes fun. You know at first I was worried, but thanks to you, I had a blast.

Sincerely,
Matt
